Overview of Thai Vi Temple

Thai Vi Temple, built in the 13th century, honors the Tran Dynasty’s kings and generals. The temple was built on the foundation of Vu Lam Fortifications, which served as a defence during the Tran Dynasty’s second resistance campaign against the Yuan-Mongols.

Thai Vi Temple is currently managed by the Tam Coc – Bich Dong eco-tourism area, making it not just a spiritual site for locals to worship, but also a popular destination for tourists looking to learn about Ninh Binh’s history.

Every three years, in the middle of the third lunar month, Thai Vi Temple is covered in the joyful and bustling atmosphere of the spring festival. People come from all around to attend the festival and to see the wonderful sights at the temple and the surrounding Tam Coc – Bich Dong region.

History of Thai Vi Temple

Without a long history of tremendous upheavals, the modest Thai Vi Temple was just the spot where monarch Tran Thai Tong, the first king of the Tran Dynasty, who reigned from 1226 to 1258, went to rest after handing over the crown to his heirs. Both subsequent kings, Tran Thanh Tong and Tran Nhan Tong, became monks here.

Later, the tranquil Thai Vi Temple, with its back to the mountain and surrounded by trees and grass, became a location where locals worship heroes who have made significant contributions to the nation.

What makes Thai Vi Temple special?

Thai Vi Temple is nestled in the lovely natural scenery of Tam Coc mountains and forests, as lyrical as a painting created by a great artist.

The temple is built in the style of old Vietnamese pagodas, with many pillars inside and out made of monolithic green stone that has been intricately carved. In front of the temple sits a year-round pure jade well, and beyond it is the gorgeous Cam Son mountain range.

Entering the temple, visitors will be impressed by the statues, stone steles, and ancient bells with elegant carved patterns. On both sides of Thai Vi Temple are the Vong houses, where people prepare offerings for the spring festival. Through the dragon yard in the middle, visitors will enter the Thai Vi main hall, where the worship statues are placed, meticulously modeled down to every detail.

Location & How to get to Thai Vi Temple

Thai Vi Temple is located in Van Lam Village, Ninh Hai Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh Province. Part of the Tam Coc – Bich Dong eco-tourism complex, to visit Thai Vi Temple, visitors from Hanoi can travel to Ninh Binh, and from Ninh Binh city to the Tam Coc area.

Visitors to Thai Vi Temple can travel by road via Van Lam Ferry or, for a more interesting experience, by boat down the Ngo Dong River via Tam Coc.

In the middle of the vast space, surrounded by mountains and forests, with golden rice fields on both sides, visitors will feel an unprecedented peace and relaxation. Slowly drifting along the cool water, entering and exiting mysterious water caves, the bamboo boat will take visitors from Tam Coc to the Thai Vi Temple area, where visitors can go up to visit, then return by boat.
