Besides the majestic rocky landscape and vibrant ethnic villages, Ha Giang holds an equally serene and breathtaking secret: Lung Khuy Cave.
Let’s find out more about this magnificent cave below!
Lung Khuy Cave is tucked away in a mountain range in Lung Khuy Village, Quan Ba District, Ha Giang. This geological marvel, formed over millions of years, was only discovered in 2015, and soon after was praised as the most beautiful cave in the highlands.
Exploring Lung Khuy Cavern truly feels like stepping into a fairyland, magically transported into the heart of a majestic stone plateau.
The name Lung Khuy is derived from the Mong ethnic village nestled at the mountain’s base. Before it became a tourist attraction, Lung Khuy Cave was simply a place where locals stopped by while avoiding the forest rain.
Visiting the village, you’ll be treated to the enchanting legend of Lung Khuy Cave. The story goes that the stone plateau was suffering a severe drought, making the lives of highland people miserable, so they prayed to Ong Troi (the sky god in Vietnamese mythology) for rain. He listened and sent a dragon deity down to help them. The dragon deity created small lakes within what is now Lung Khuy Cave.
Later, the dragon deity fell in love and married a local Mong girl, and they lived in the cave together, guarding the water source for future generations. The name “Lung Khuy” in Mong language means “dragon in the rock”.
Lung Khuy Cave stretches for an impressive 1000 meters. The cave entrance is quite narrow, only about 1.5 meters high and 1 meter wide, hidden under the dense canopy of trees halfway up the mountain. This contributed to its recent discovery in 2015, despite existing for hundreds of millions of years.
Today, the path to the cave and its entrance have been rebuilt, ensuring convenient access for visitors. Entering the cave, visitors will be surprised by the vast space that suddenly opens up before their eyes. Lung Khuy Cave has a high ceiling, and its widest section extends an astonishing 200 meters!
Within Lung Khuy Cave, you’ll discover a breathtaking display of densely arranged stalactites, forming a myriad of shapes and clusters. Admiring them, each visitor can imagine a different magical scene.
Furthermore, the cave has numerous serene pools of water, with massive stalactites hanging above them like grandiose natural chandeliers. As you explore, the gentle drip of water from the stalactites into the lakes creates a pleasant, welcoming melody.
For a comfortable and safe journey for visitors, Lung Khuy Cave is equipped with a system of iron-framed walkways and colored lights that illuminate the stalactite formations.
Lung Khuy is located about 10 km from the center of Quan Ba district, halfway up the mountain. To visit the cave, you’ll travel along National Highway 4C (the Happiness Road) to Tam Son town. From there, it’s an 8-kilometer drive by car, followed by a scenic 2-kilometer hike to Lung Khuy Cave.
