Overview of Cai Beo Fishing Village

Cai Beo, a historic fishing town, is one of the few sites that has preserved its wild natural beauty and long-standing traditional culture, and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Lan Ha Bay.

Currently, the fishing village includes around 300 households that rely primarily on aquaculture and fishing. The blue or red floating houses are close together, joined by fish cages, and from above, look like wooden jigsaw pieces against Lan Ha Bay’s blue background.

The simple, peaceful beauty, along with the unique cultural beauty of Cai Beo Fishing Village, is what attracts countless tourists to visit here.

History

Cai Beo Fishing Village is one of the most important archaeological sites in the bay, considered one of the cradles of ancient Vietnamese culture. The artifacts discovered here date back from 4000 years to 7000 years!

According to local fishermen, “beo” means the cove, and “cai” means big. Cai Beo is one of the few large coves around the Cat Ba Archipelago that was chosen by prehistoric residents as a permanent residence.

In 2009, Cai Beo fishing village was recognized as a National Monument in Vietnam.

Cai Beo fishing village is located in the Cat Ba archipelago of Lan Ha Bay, about 1.5 kilometers southeast of Cat Ba town center.

Visitors may visit the Cai Beo fishing village by renting a boat to Cat Ba island and then taking a bus there.
